MICRODERMABRASION FOR THE BODY

Body microdermabrasion is less common than microdermabrasion for the face but the demand continues to grow.

Currently the two main types of skin problems being addressed in body microdermabrasion treatments are stretch marks and keloid scar tissue. Stretch marks are often found on the stomach, thighs and breasts, and result from gaining weight in those areas and then losing it too quickly. The stretched skin has lost its resiliency and doesn't retract correctly.

Apart from the weight fluctuation scenario, stretch marks can also occur during puberty and pregnancy.

So how difficult is it to treat stretch marks?

Again it depends on how long they have been there, the age of the client, and the area on the body where they're located. The key to successfully treating stretch mark and keloid scarring is to use a medical strength machine, which offers a variety of settings. Therapists will usually start treatments on a lower setting and then increase it as the sessions progress. The repair process works faster on facial skin because it has a more accessible blood flow than the skin on the body.

Eventually a microdermabrasion machine designed specifically for the body will be offered on the market. This will be exciting news for all of us with skin problems in areas other than the face.
