MICRODERMABRASION CRYSTALS
Microdermabrasion crystals are usually supplied by the manufacturer of the microderm-abrasion machine. Some manufacturers focus on the bottom line, choosing to supply a more cost-effective form of crystal. Others are concerned with quality rather than price. The onus is on the beauty salon owner to check with the manufacturer to ensure that the crystals supplied are top quality.
Crystals are derived from corundum (aluminum oxide), organic salt or sapphires. In our salon, we use Austrian sapphire crystals exclusively because they are top quality and contain no impurities.
Why is quality so important?
High quality crystals can be applied more evenly to the skin, resulting in a consistent abrade and minimal damage to the skin's surface.
How long do crystals last before they need to be replaced?
The shelf life of crystals is determined by their color. Fresh sapphire crystals are a brilliant blue color, which eventually transforms into a
light pink shade over time. When crystals in the microdermabrasion machine turn pink, they are due for a recharge.

Recharging the crystals is a simple process, and can be achieved in two ways. The beauty therapist can place them in direct sunlight for 10-15 minutes, or place them in an oven set at low heat for the same amount of time. Once they regain their original blue color, they can be removed from
the heat source.

If the crystals fail to regain their color after 15 minutes, this indicates they are spent and must be discarded and replaced with a fresh batch. Shelf life is influenced by the climate of the region where the microdermabrasion service is offered.
