MICRODERMABRASION AND PLASTIC SURGERY
Microdermabrasion and plastic surgery may sound like an "either/or" scenario, but many prominent plastic surgeons are combining both procedures with excellent results.
There are two ways microdermabrasion can be used in conjunction with plastic surgery:
- To prepare the skin for surgery
Several plastic surgeons that we work with recommend a course of lactic/glycolic acid peels plus microdermabrasion prior to plastic surgery. Here's why:
The vacuum part of the microdermabrasion process offers three main benefits for plastic surgery candidates:
- It promotes erythema or flushing, which improves circulation and stimulates the skin renewal process.
- It stimulates collagen production, which improves the tone of the skin.
- It accelerates lymph drainage, which helps remove toxins from the skin, improving its overall condition.
These three functions improve the health of the skin so that it's in a much stronger condition to face the stress of surgery.
- To speed up the recovery process
The additional benefit of doing a series of microdermabrasion treatments prior to plastic surgery is that the skin is able to heal faster and with better and longer lasting results. We're not implying that undertaking plastic surgery without preparing the skin with microdermabrasion, IPL treatments or lactic acid is risky. But we are suggesting that if you want to do everything in your power to ensure a positive outcome, you might want to consider preparing with one or more of these procedures.
You could compare this approach to an athlete preparing for a marathon. He takes great care preparing for the event, because he understands that the better condition he's in beforehand, the more likely he'll achieve an excellent result.
This applies primarily to surgery such as face lifts, but it can be helpful for any surgery to the face.
Microdermabrasion vs Plastic Surgery
There are some skin conditions where microdermabrasion is recommended in place of plastic surgery. If you suffer from enlarged pores, age spots, pigmentation, freckles or discoloration, you can't reverse those with surgery. They require a resurfacing of the skin, which is one of the main functions of microdermabrasion.
So if you've elected to undergo plastic surgery and you suffer from these other conditions as
well, you'll achieve a more dramatic change in your appearance by incorporating microdermabrasion into your pre-surgery schedule.
